Some other tool, preferably straightforward and free, that turns VOBs back into their constituent MPEG files. (*) A couple commenters in the Tools Review section for VOB2MPEG stated a preference for version 1, over version 2. My impression was that version 1 did not require MS Net Framework. I tried to invoke version 1.1, since it seems to be directly runnable, without a formal installation. There was an error mentioning the lack of file MSCOREE.DLL. In looking for this on the internet, I found some messages to the effect that this dll file alone won't solve the problem, if one is seeing that error; instead, the whole Net Framework needs to be installed. So, I'm wondering what other tools there may be in this category, that don't require extra MS bloatware overhead.

This is edging into a separate question, but I have also resisted installing some things (into W2K SP4) -- such as Net Framework, WM-10, or Direct X 9.0c Runtime -- because I don't trust MS as far as I can throw them. I don't want to mess with anything that might introduce more security issues, DRM, "phone-home" behavior, or things of that nature. A touch of paranoia, or just prudent caution ?

(* I think I may have done this a couple times -- unintentionally -- using some part of the Nero 6 Ultra suite. NeroVision ? Nero Recode ? But I don't know if this produces good quality MPEG files, or is otherwise a desirable method.)

There are several tools that can rip a DVD to MPEG:

    DVDDecrypter(free, also built-in ripping)
    Smartripper(free, also built-in ripping)
    Rejig(free)
TMPGEnc DVD Author(DVD to one MPG file, only one audio audio track)
    VOBEdit(free)
VOB2MPG (DVD to one MPG file, FREE and VERY VERY VERY VERY EASY TO USE!!!)

And probably a few more. This guide may assist you: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=224833

Thanks for the varied suggestions. I already had several of these, such as SmartRipper, which was quite good in its day and I wondered if anyone still used it for something. (But probably not on some latter day DVDs that have the sort of junk on 'em for which you need Fab Decrypter.)

Regarding VOB2MPG, all versions apparently require Net Framework, and no one seems to have picked up on my query about whether Net Framework is one of those MS things that has security, DRM, or other negative implications.
I have have some misgivings about anything from MS that has the word .net in it also. I have it on a couple of computers with both .net 1 and 2 no problems. Here's one discussion that I found that has the pros and cons of using the framework: http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=686

If you want to get away from .net, DVD Decrypter is a good option, but it does take a few more steps.

Not a problem. I'm already familiar with DVD Decrypter, and it's a tool I really like. I'll have to go back to review your list, to see if it's one of the tools that can output MPEG files.
