  1. Im trying to get .avi movies (as in full length films, not 15 second clips) to play on a computer running windows 95(4.00.950a). It has 16 mbs of RAM and a 150 Mhz processor. Is this even possible. I've already tried using divx 3.11 and WMP 6.4 which says a working decompressor cannot be found. Is there some other media player which will work with my system or something else I could try?

I run a simular system but with 256M of ram.
I dont think there is a single player that will run in 16M.
I use WMP and it works well in this system.

    Try installing the correct codec.

Use GSPOT to idenitify the type of file and codec needed

Yes use gspot to find the correct codec.

An alternative would be to use a faster computer and convert the file to vcd. VCD is an old format that should play fine on an older system like 95 with slow system resources.

Older versions of BS Player also work on slower machines. I could watch video in Desktop mode on my AMD K-6-2 machine using BS.

Not possible. You need 400 MHz CPU to play DIVX-style files. Trust me. You also need at least 256 megs.

And use VLC, as it's likely the lightest player around. I've done it.

  6. Why not just buy a cheapo Divx-capable DVD player? You can get them for ~$50 at Walmart, and then you can just watch your videos on your TV...

  7. KSChang, you don't need 400 mhz or 256 megs of ram to play DivX. I used to play them on a 266 mhz pentium 2 with 64 megs of ram when I was a kid.

mplayer is lighter on resources than VLC. Best bet would be to run it under some kind of dedicated linux distro though.

Heh. When I used Win95, I was playing almost every video using DOS players. Of course, this was the time before DivX and MPEG-4.

I used DISPLAY (which apparently stopped development somewhere around that time), and it handled AVIs and Quicktime movies decently for the time. I think I saw something for DOS a few months back that would allow for DivX/XVid playback, but don't remember what it was.
