Because the source is VHS, 224 should be sufficient. Bear in mind that if you're putting your captured file on DVD you should set it for 48000hz, not 44100.

You can't use mp3 if your going to make a dvd. It has to be wav (pcm), mp2 (mpeg audio layer 2), or ac3 (or dts but you have to have another compatible format like ac3 or wav in order to play it on a tv without a dts receiver since a dts only dvd is out of spec but usually playable - but it will be soundless if played only through a tv since a tv generally doesn't have a dts decoder on board).
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

If you set it for PCM than it's going to take up considerably more space than 224kbps mp2 or AC3. PCM is uncompressed.

If it's for DVD it must be 48KHz no matter what codec you use.

You can then set it on 224kbps if using the AC3 ACM, OR you can use PCM WAV, which is 1536kbps straight up. It all depends on what you want the outcome to be. If the source is VHS, then I'd go with the first option.
    If in doubt, Google it.
