an example of one of my problem files: if i try to open a mariah carey song it will play as a brian tracy audio book. This is the majority of my mp3s. They seemed to be mixed up and confused

What player(s) are you using? Also, when you're experiencing the problem of 'other' things playing when you try to play an MP3, do the 'other' files exist elsewhere on your system, or are they files you've deleted in the past? Does this happen with MP3s you create yourself?

Running Scandisk/chkdsk or another hard drive repair utility on the drive where your MP3s are stored might be a good idea, if you're hearing unexpected files that are elsewhere on your drive or that you've deleted in the past. It might mean that your files are crosslinked.

Another thing to note (and I'm not saying this is what you did) is that over file sharing services/P2P, there are reportedly people who create files with random content (static, other audio/video, even porn), then give them names of popular songs/movies to foil those looking for such things.

Did Scandisk give you any information/error messages? If the files are crosslinked or overwritten, Scandisk usually can't do much to restore the files to the way they were.

I can't offer many suggestions without knowing a little more information, such as the questions I asked above.

And, one more question I forgot to ask:

some of my media wont open cus file extension is not recognized.
Which file extension is not being recognized?

i did the scan while i was sleeping, when i woke there were no messages, just that the scan was complete.

the file extension that is not recognized is mp3. some mp3s are recognized while others are not. when i get file extension not recognized error i cant open the file at all.
