Dont wait. Go Toshiba RD-XS_4 models. You wont regret it.

  8. lol. Can you even buy those Toshiba in stores? I think not, they are not available in retail. I believe most people want to go in a store and pick the item up. Also I wouldn't get any recorder manufacturered by Funai/Sylvania, like the Toshiba D-R5/D-RW2.

  9. I tried the toshiba D-r4 and it did not like my sony rw's. The recorder made me miss an episode of a series I was recording for the last month so back it went. I am actually getting pretty impatient and might end up giving the D-r5 a try.

You know, funny enough, if you Google this DVD recorder, you come across this VH post, and the JVC press release. And nothing more, no stores.

  12. Lordsmurf,
JVC (800-252-5722) advises JVC DRM101S no longer has a release date.
They advise buyers to consider the recently released DR-MV7S unit.

Seems we will never see the DRM101S.

What replacement unit do you suggest?

What's the main purpose that you need the unit for ? Transferring tapes or using the unit to timeshift like a VCR/Tivo ?

Yeah, that's the same question I had too.

These are the best recorders currently available:
    - JVC recorders, any of them.
    - Pioneer that does 352x480 Half D1 @ 3-hour settings
    - Toshiba that has noise reduction options.
    - LiteOn that has 3-hour LP mode.
    - Zenith with LSI chipset and a 3-hour mode or 3-hour settings.
    - Samsung with LSI chipset and a 3-hour mode or 3-hour settings.
    - LG with LSI chipset.

Which one you pick heavily relies and what you want to do (recording modes, media), what sources you're working with.

You can buy the previous model JVC DR-M100S here for $190:

  16. I would not buy anything from that place. They have a terrible rating on resellers ratings.

  17. The main purpose I need this unit for is to transfer analog Hi8 and digital Hi8 tapes to DVD.

PQ is my most important criteria. I want to *minimize* introducing artifacts and other digital noise during transfer.

Would like to keep the price under $250.
Don't need a unit with a HD - as I will be editing DVD transfers on a PC using "TMPGEnc DVD Author Pro" (TDA) software since it does NOT recode video when editing .vob files.

    Secondary considerations:
    1. hue, brightness, contrast and color *input* adjustments.
    2. creating titles and/or chapters automatically when timecode changes.

You asked what media I planned on using.
Either 16x Verbatim or Sony/Fuji branded TY 8x media.
I have 100's of these blank discs.

I have been using a Pio DV-R 220s for these transfers. PQ is "reasonably high" at SP, even after correcting source material (hue, brightness, contrast and/or color saturation) during transfer.

With hundreds of camcorder tapes yet to transfer, use of the Pio unit is very time consuming without automatic title and/or chapter creation when timecode changes.

With so many forum members recommending JVC units for high quality transfers, I was hoping the "apparently withdrawn" JVC DR-M101s would meet my needs.

Will the now discontinued JVC DR-M100s meet my needs?
And if so, where can I get a new unit from an authorized JVC dealer?

  18. If the M100S is like the M10S I have tested, it will be a IRE=0 machine. NTSC Hi8 is IRE=7.5. That is not a problem if you have a color corrector or process amplifier. I have a JVC JX-C7 color corrector which allows me to adjust hue, saturation, contrast, sharpness, and IRE level before the signal goes to the recorder.

If you would like to see what happens when an M10S records IRE=7.5 material vs IRE=0, check the test results for the M10S on this link,

A couple other places that have the DR-100S at reasonable prices. Not sure how good these dealers are, so buy with caution.

The only apparent differences between the 10/100 and 101 are that the 10/100 uses -R/-RW/RAM and the 101 (if it existed) uses -R/+R/-RW/+RW and has HDMI output.

None of the JVC recorders has any input adjustment, but usually it will "adjust" the picture automatically to the best quality.

I disagree with the IRE=0 comment. I've never been able to replicate that error on the DR-M10 or DR-M100.

I tend to think some machines have flaws that cause it. Mine are set correctly, or at least very close to it. (I've never actually seen a machine that was 100% correct, they all tend to vary a bit). There is also issues with testing material, as that can vary a lot too.

I have seen an example of this error, but only once. It's from somebody else's recorder. Most of them are fine, that I've seen to date.

I would be careful ordering from one of those shady camera/video places. I would avoid the A&M one for sure. Always do some research. Type a company name and "sucks" into google, when in doubt.

These merchants are the same people!! DO NOT BE FOOLED.
Again, just be careful. Some of the mail-order places are shitholes that try to scam you into buying worthless warranties (MACK Warranty, for example, is toilet paper), or selling you extra junk you don't need. As long as it's a no-BS buy, then go for it. These sort of scummy camera/video/audio salesman pre-date the Internet, this is nothing new. I also know how to call my credit card company and fight BS businesses. If they called me to "confirm the order", then I would cancel. Don't waste any time on the phone with a company. Just tell them "nevermind" and hang up. If they call back, tell them to "**** off" and hang up again.

  22. It is true that the IRE of sources can vary but for these tests, I independently verified the that source was a genuine 0 or 7.5 with a scope. The Sony GX315 behaved almost identically to the M10S that I still have here in terms of IRE.

Your comment may be valuable though because if it can vary, it might be adjustable internally even if no external control is available.
