Hi
I'm a newbie Linux user having just switched from Windows and am looking for a little help in doing some of the same things I used to do in Windows - specifically encode and burn mpeg1 (VCD) files.
In Windows I used to use Tmpgenc or Mainconcept to encode avi files to xvcd.
Tmpgenc was used to encode the video while I used a combination of virtualdub and toolame to encode the audio. I'd then use Tmpgenc again to mux the video and audio together and finally Nero to burn the VCD.
I've had a look around and am not so sure it is as easy to do these things in Linux as in windows.
I've found Avimux which seems to be a great tool - but it won't let me encode a VCD out of spec.
I'm guessing I'll use avidemux as a vdub replacement in Linux so am also looking for some software that will let me encode an mpeg1 file out of spec and then something that will let me mux the audio with the video as a VCD mpeg file (as I could in Tmpgenc).
I've already discovered Twolame for the audio.
Can anbody help me out here?
Please recommend some software to me - and if possible point me in the direction of any guides if they are available.

Take a look at Transcode. Quite a beast, but handles almost any de/encoding task.
...but shouldn't the XVCD "codec" setting work?

farcus - Have you considered loading Wine or a similar emulator and then seeing if TMPGenc, etc. will run correctly under it? This is EXACTLY why I run Windows at home, even though I make my living in the Unix world. I rely too much on video and a few other programs that work perfectly in Windows and there aren't any suitable replacements in Linux.
