  1. Gang,

Yes, I'm dumb enough to have attempted an install of a beta version of a core program. Couple days ago, I thought I'd upgrade IE Version 6 to brand, spankin' new Version 7 Beta 3. First, the MS page does a bunch of checking, then the install begins. After lots more updating, the install ends and tells me: "Internet Explorer 7 failed to install. Please reboot to return to previous state" or something like that. So I rebooted. Only to find that the install not only failed with IE7 but went ahead and wiped out IE6 as well. (The only browser I had on my system.) Also, many programs which need to access IE files no longer work: HelpCenter, Outlook, Diskkeeper, and -- worst of all -- System Restore!

Called Microsoft and they'll get back to me with a fix in 24 to 72 hours.

My internet connection remains live, so Thunderbird and all the updates functions within various programs(Ad Aware, AVG, etc) still work. But nothing connected to the dead-browser does.

Do you think if I installed Opera or Firefox, I'd able to browse again. Or would that further screw up the system?

    Thanks!

Firefox and IE can co-exist on the same system.

You also might want to put your WIN XP CD into your drive and go to SETUP and see if ADD WINDOWS PROGRAMS or REPAIR INSTALLATION will reinstall IE.

  3. Thank you, SLK. I'll try the repair install.

Do you know if Opera is completely separate from IE, or does it piggyback?

    Just use Firefox.

  6. Try going to add/remove programs, then choose add/remove windows components. One of the options is Internet Explorer. Try unchecking that, reboot, Then do it again checking it and see if IE comes back to life.

Thanks, TBoneit. I tried that. But I run into the same roadblock as I do with all the programs which now do not work: "cannot find iertutil.dll".

  8. Did you try running sfc /scannow from a command prompt?

click start, choos run then enter sfc /scannow and hav the proper Xp disc on hand in case it asks for it.

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/index-i.shtml (never used em, hopefully this is a legit site) but they show iertutil.dll as downloadable.

    Here is what they show,
Here you can download iertutil.dll free of charge. The file is compressed so you need an unzip software in order to use the file. We recommend you to use ExpressZIP. We also recommend you to read the tutorial how to unzip and install the files. If your problem isn't solved, we offer Live Computer Support with a low-cost montlhy subsciption plan starting at $7.40/month.
Use the link below to start downloading iertutil.dll.

File description: Run time utility for Internet Explorer, v. 7.0.5450.4
    Filesize to download: 98.1 kb
    Recommendation for iertutil.dll:
To get control over your running programs we suggest WinTasks 5 Pro
    Remove iertutil.dll: Use WinTasks
Fix iertutil.dll Errors: Free Registry Scan

Caveat like I say never been there and used them. They turned up in a quick google search. It looks like lots of people needing to fix this problem. I'm suspecting that it isn't needed in XP pre IE7. You could try downloading it, Putting it in the \windows\system32 directory and see if that does it if not and regedit works do a search and see if you can find where it should be. Other places to try \program files\Internet Explorer or \windows

    Good Luck

dll-file.com is fine. Note that there is no S at the end. dll-files.com (with the S, which is the site you mentioned) is a copy of dll-file.com but doesn't work very well and often has download difficulties. dlldump.com is the one to avoid entirely. Just remember that it's name says it all.
