  1. Also defrag your registry. Yep.....It gets bloated. Also, turn off any indexing programs, e.g. Content Indexing as these eat up a lot of cpu speed.

"Microsoft actually does not recommend disk defragmentation for XP. They say it's not necessary."

Yeah, that's why they include a defraging program.

It was included, because defragmenting is necessary.
Believing yourself to be secure only takes one cracker to dispel your belief.

  4. I don't defrag my data drives. Mor eor less anyway. When a project is done and everything is backed up I take the easy way out and do a quick format of the drive. end of any fragmentation.

get the latest copy of diskeeper pro. great for xp because it allows you to do a boot-time defrag before the os loads. use set-it-and-forget-it to automatically defrag as needed.

  6. There are friends that uses office laptops and desktops. The office pre-installed a whole host of utilities and anti-virus. That slow the computers down, and induce very long boot time.

One of the way to deal with this, is to configure the computers to "Hibernates" instead of "shutdown" when the power button is pushed. It make a big different ! People overlook this when they are on a desktop because Hibernation is mostly associated with laptop only.

  7. Do what I do, re-install windowsXP from scarth every six months.

    Format the HD, install windows.
Get the latest drivers for Motherboard/vga.
Before doing anything else (like visit a website etc)
Do all the windows updates (like 59 of them as of now)
    install MS Windows Defender beta.
Install all the programs from scratch.

You computer will run smooth for at least a few months now.
