I'm having problems playing some AVI files with winamp and with WMP. I get no error messege, just a refusal to play.

gspot reports that I have 2 compatible codecs, and a few players (including bsplayer, MPC, virtualDUB and divX player) manage to play these AVIs just fine.

On another machine I can play these AVIs in winamp and WMP as well.

Also note that winamp and WMP play other AVI files just fine, and that I tried uninstalling and reinstalling them.

Can anyone please tell me what may be wrong, and how I can fix it?

    (I'm using winXP sp2)

So what codecs are reported as usable?

Just because the codecs are available, doesn't mean you have winamp or WMP configured to use them. Your best bet is to remove all of the extra / corrupt / unused codecs. You can use a program such as codec sniper or do it manually. Then reinstall the latest versions of only the codecs that you need.

The codecs GSpot finds are ffdshow and divx. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling ffdshow and winamp, and nothing changed.

Any advice as to how I can configure winamp/WMP to use the codec correctly, or how I can get a cleaner uninstall so that it can be reinstalled correctly?

I also uninstalled the divx codecs.

You should be able to now reinstall divx. That should correct your avi playback problems.

You may also need to uninstall/reinstall winamp.
