so i found out recently that there are mainly two types of lcd monitors; 8bit and 6bit
(although good luck trying to find out what a particular unit is)
here is an interesting article about it:

If you are a gamer looking for speed, you will see no real difference at 6bit. Games can't afford the luxury of 24bit color.
If you are doing home theater, there are other more important issues such as contrast, gamma and ability to refresh 60-100Hz.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

I doubt there is a gamer anywhere that cares if the monster is a particular Pantone shade of green. Only ad agency geeks seem to have those kinds of color sensitivities for packaging or food color match.

I like Pantone's observation "WHY WYS IS NOT WYG"
Gamers seem to care about 1) speed, then 2) speed, then 3) speed then # colors on screen at one time. Never have I heard an argument over accuracy of color shades. -
There are gamers and gamers. There are videocards and videocards. PC can go beyond any gaming console resolution. The latest one:
...four GeForce 7800 GTX chips, Nvidia's current highest-end silicon. With that much power, Nvidia claims that you can achieve 2,560x1,600 resolution output, which is well higher than the 1,600x1,200 capability we're used to considering as the high end of 3D display. Nvidia also brags about 32X antialiasing and 16X anisotropic filtering, twice the current capability of standard SLI configurations. Of course, to take full advantage of Quad SLI capability, you'll need a display capable of such high resolution output, and for that, you'll need to drop more than $2,000 on a 30-inch LCD, in addition to the price of each card.
I admit thou that on my PC I run games at only 1152x864 and no antialiasing, because of my 19" screen and limited disposable income in that direction
