I have just purchased a Samsung HD860 dvd player hoping that it would play divx films. There appears to be one major problem with this player you cannot control the aspect ratio on divx films it’s always fill the screen it’s not to bad on 16.9 films but with 2.35 films there is major cut off problem!
Samsung have introduced an EZ view option on the r/c which corrects the aspect ratio on dvd films but the option is invalid on divx films.

Is there any software that can alter the divx/avi file aspect ratio? If so hopefully the vertical aspect will have to change because of Samsung’s fill screen option. I want to introduce the black lines on top and bottom to override Samsungs fill screen option.

  4. Press Browse, select file. Set desired aspect ratio. Save.

Your player may or may not repect the AR setting.

Tried the conversion but nothing happened? Checked the avi file with MediaInfo AR unchanged 672x272. What I am trying to do is add black bars to the top & bottom of the vertical aspect.

672x272 is not the display aspect ratio, it's the frame size. The display aspect ratio is simply a value in the xvid data that tells the player what shape to display the image. The hope was that your player would use that setting and display the video with the correct aspect ratio -- so you wouldn't have to add borders and recompress.

If you are forced to add borders you can use VirualDub. Add the resize filter and use the "expand frame and letterbox image" option to add borders. You'll also have to specify the output codec to use (presumably Xvid) and its parameters.
