Can anyone tell me the steps needed to rip a movie, maintaining its original audio format (5.1), into a a usable file for editing in Adobe Premier 1.5 then burning it back into a playable DVD? have a little project that I want to do with movie clips...but want to keep the surround sound as well, thanks.

You may have to demux the 5.1 back into 6 mono tracks to do this. Tools such as BeSweet and Heada3he may help. Of course it also depends on what type of editing you need to do. Premiere may not be the best tool for this job if only simple cuts are required.

Well...Im trying to do a little demo disk to show of 5.1 sound...but only using clips from certain movies, I may want to add in transitions between the clips and some text. I will be splicing it together with some scenic fotage as well to show of visual clarity and such. Then I want to burn it to a playable DVD...what programs are best suited for this? (I only mentioned premier because I have and use it for my own digital movies from my camcorder) Thanks

I don't know of anything that will do what you want easily. If you just wanted to add a group of clips together to make a demo disk, I would suggest DVD Shrink or TDA, or perhaps even DLP. However if you want to edit them, add transitions etc, then you will have to do it the hard way, no matter what software you use. Your transitions and links will have to have 5.1 audio, and you will have to do your editing using 6 mono channels to be encoded again at the end of the edit.

If you drop the idea of transitions then it isn't so hard. You can even replace footage without too much trouble. Just don't try to edit anything.
