    Hello,
I'd like to make some mpg files smaller without losing too much quality in order for them all to fit on a dvd. I've tried searching but I'm not really sure what to search under. Can someone give me some suggestions as to what programs to use?
    Thanks in advance

rejig can transcode mpg files. Otherwise, author to a DVD structure, and use DVD Shrink. If you have to reduce them a lot, you may be better off re-encoding instead.

If you want to make them smaller, you will need to re-encode them. There is always some quality lose with re-encoding, especially to a smaller size. How much smaller do they need to be?

For encoding, look to the left for 'CONVERT' and you will see quite a few guides there. In 'Tools' look in 'Video Encoders (MPG/DVD)'.

    And welcome to our forums.

EDIT: Thanks, guns1inger, I forgot about Rejig.

    Thanks
I'm not sure how small I need to make them. I'm a teacher and I'm taking the videos and clips that we use during the year and putting them on 1 or 2 DVDs.

Ok...as I'm searching for conversion tools and I've downloaded 3 programs I'm lost. Let's say I have a 200MB mpg file and would like to compress it to a 150MB mpg file. How would I do that?

My plan is to compress a bunch of files that I've already converted to mpg from VHS tapes and then use Intervideo windvd creator to make a dvd...unless there is a better way.

As I said in my original post, you can author them as they are, then use DVD Shrink on them to make them fit to a disc, or you can try to compress each file seperately. Authoring and then shrink will be easiest. If you want to do them seperately, look at Rejig. You should also use a bitrate calculator, as size is determined by bitrate and runtime.

Sorry for being an idiot. I used ReJig to shrink them into an audio file and a video file. I then multiplexed(?) them and got the audio and video ts folders. I'm unsure what to do with those. I know what the vob files and everything are from past experience but if I have multiple video ts folders, is it relatively easy to combine them all on a dvd?
    Sorry for my inexperience

You demuxed them, you didn't shrink them. Open Rejig and click on File Mode. Click on Add and browse to your mpeg file. Select it and click Done. Now select your % reduction (1 pass) or target file size (2 pass) and click on Recompress.

Im not exactly sure what files you are using as its a bit unclear , Vobs or Mpegs but take the vob/mpg and remux the original audio with it , the compression you wanted will have been done to your video component . Im assuming this as the advice from Guns1inger gave you demuxed files which you then compressed , I can only think you havent remuxed the audio back to the video .

Just reread your problem , remux to make a mpg (which is different to my problem , Ive also just realised how to do it btw . Use say Muxman or TMPGEnc Tools

    https://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=Muxman

You`ll need to start searching for guides if you want to know how to do it , it should give you a mpg that will fit on a dvd .
