    I have an avi with hardcoded subtitles, I need to find a way of cropping just the lower portion of the screen.

    avi codec info:

    You will have to re-encode. Virtualdub is probably as good a solution as any.

    Thanks for the reply guns1inger, but i don't need to recode surely, just add a black bar to the lower portion of the screen, maybe?

    Yes, you do have to reencode. And VirtualDub is the tool to use.

    You are changing the content of the data in the video portion of the container (avi). You have to re-encode to do this. This holds true whether you crop it off, or cover it up.
