I was curious about this. They've been doing there piecemeal updates for awhile now. But will the put together a comprehensive update to XP and make it sp3? Or will they just keep doing the small updates until we're all forced to upgrade to VISTA??
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

    Hi,
my opinion only...... and that all it is because M$ doesn't release a lot of info about there plans....
    1. M$ will be making patches for winxp for at least 5 years!!look at how long M$ was making patches for it.....!! smiling....
    2. as far as a sp3..... that will depend strictly on M$ if there going to make any major comprehensive changes to winxp!!! various fators comes into play
    a. a comprehensive sp3 patch can cause more issues than sovled there a lot problems with the sp2 patch and M$ going to be thinking carefully about that!! smile...
    b. M$ is not going to speend a lot of time and money on a comprehensive sp3 patch...... unless there a real good reason and I don't see any... and with vista estamiated released date of early next year.... all of there attention and most of there resources are going into that!!!
    3. if after release of vista there still a strong demand for winxp , and there maybe, then you may see small sp3 patch released!!

any way those are my thoughts..... there very little info from M$ on what there plans are..

    I concur. Vista is SP3.

There is also a alternative to MS updates: http://www.autopatcher.com/

Then you can pick and choose the updates you want, all in one package and not use Windows Update.

I think Vista is still a while off, and I'm not so sure it will be worth the wait.

Beat me to it. Yeah, that's particularly good for reinstalls, get the rollups as they come out and save them, you can get up-to-date upon reinstall without ever going online. Then you don't need Windows Update at all. Or include the latest rollup in a slipstreamed install disc.

Here's another alternative, won't work with I.E. you gotta have FF, Moz, Opera, et. al.:

There was talk for a while that there would be an update for XP that would include some features from Vista, including the Aero GUI and a few other bits and pieces. This may not happen now that there are 253 different variations of Vista to hit the market. That siad, having played with the current beta version of Vista, I can't yet see a reason to upgrade.

I did adopt the 'Royale' theme (I believe it was developed for Vista) as I like the way it makes the toolbars look compared to the default XP theme. There are a lot of add-ons out there that can give a 'Vista' appearance to XP.

I tried an early Vista beta, but I didn't really like the 'black' appearance.

Aero goes way beyond a skin. If you have the hardware grunt, it is a whole different interface engine. Unfortunately I have only used it on a laptop, which did not have the grunt, and so the theme is just a black skin (which I don't mind, and have on my home XP installation)

There will probably not be a service pack 3 for windows xp. For one it is not really needed since no major updates to the operating system itself have happened and another is that Vista will be available soon and if anyone needs an update that will be the one to purchase.
