Sorry, my first post is a question. I have searched and have not found an answer, but then I am not sure what the question is, or at least what I should search for maybe...

My JVC dvd recorder failed after a year and a half of excellent service. Because I bought it at COSTCO they were extremely accommodating and took it back. It was giving that common as I have found fault were it locks up showing loading on the display. I exchanged it for a Sony rdr-hx525 which so far seems to be a great unit, the menus are a little tricky though.

My problem is that when the unit failed I had an open dvd-r waiting for another program to fill it before finalising. I really want the material that is already on the disk.

The Sony will not look at the disk, expected really. But also I can not get my laptop to see the disk, even the DLA software I use for the laptop DVD-RAM drive will not see the disk.

This has to be software, I hoped to maybe discover something on the JVC site but, in fairness the JVC site is horrible to navigate. I finally found an e-mail address to JVC, 30 minutes hunting on their site, they really do not want customers to contact them. They have not responded to two emails from me.

    So, summary.

Is there anyway other than finding someone who owns a JVC recorder for me to close this disk. I realise that JVC during finalise also write the IFO files, but I will live with just closing it and ripping the VOBs to the HD and hand author a DVD.

    Has anyone managed this?

Thank you in advance for any help received, sorry the long winded first post.

ISOBuster can probably get the files off the DVD for you. I don't know of anyway to finalise the disc though.

Thank you for your quick reply.

I am not sure about that, I will try in a short while. The problem I am having is that the drive will not even recognise that a DVD has been inserted. I do not want to use a UDF/DLA type program to attempt to format the disk as I fear it will destroy any access to the data at all.

I think I need something to read the JVC udf system.

You were right, I was wrong, I have just extracted the main file I wanted. Saved to the HD as a tao, I renamed to VOB and it plays completely as the movie in nero.

Thank you so much, when the computer (windows explorer) did not seem to recognise the disks presence I did not think to pursue it any more. It was probably because I have cd writing switched off on the drive.

I am so happy and glad I posted.
