WinDV can transfer it to your HDD into an AVI file (13GBs per hour of footage), as can Windows Movie Maker. Chances are you received a disc with either your camera or firewire card that may also have an editing program on it. It might be worth digging out.
WMM can be used to edit your footage, but it can only output WMV or DV avi.
What do you intend to do with the edited footage ?Read my blog here.

i intend to architect cinematic masterpieces.
Beginner to moderate needs : Premiere Elements or Vegas Movie Studio, or perhaps Video Studio from Ulead.
More ambitious to semi-pro : Premiere Pro or Vegas
You also need to look at authoring software if you intend to finish up on DVD.
You should also consider upgrading your RAM to 1GB, and adding a second HDD. Another 120GB would be a good start.Read my blog here.

lofty ambition indeed! i can't help it man, i'm a johnny.
according to kabalarian philosophy, people named johnny:
"have large ambitions, and it is difficult for you to be tolerant and understanding of those who desire less in life or who are more slow and methodical by nature.
do, however, have leadership ability and would never be happy in a subservient position.
are ambitious and aggressive by nature.
would be happiest in positions where you are free to express individually and creatively and where opportunities are not restricted; you desire freedom, and do not tolerate being possessed by others. :P
appreciate change and travel, and the opportunity to meet and mix with others, and to influence them with your creative ideas."
not to mention i'm an aquarius. :P
