  1. Hello everyone = =

I have a strange problem with subtitles...
I have been using AVI2DVD to convert my DivX files to MPEG-2 with subtitles using the HCEnc encoder. After burning the ISO to a DVD and watching the video on my DVD player, I've noticed something weird -- the subtitles start off fine, but halfway through (or at some random point in the movie), all the apostrophes and question marks turn into underscores... and it stays like that for the rest of the movie. For some files, the problem doesn't occur at all, but for others it seems to start off with the underscores from the very beginning or in the middle of the video. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening and how I can fix it? Thanks for any help.

Edit -- the subtitles are in .srt format.

I can take a guess: the font you used vs. the ASCII set you used is the problem.

Microsoft Word and such have what it calls Smart Quotes, as it doesn't use ', but instead it has a beginning and an ending quote (both single and double). Somehow this wasn't cleaned up in the SRT, and when it was converted to the DVD subtitle format, the font used don't have those characters, and they became underscores.

That's just a guess though. You need to check the SRT file itself to see if that's indeed the case.

  3. Yes, I checked the SRT files, and this did turn out to be the problem. Apparently, Microsoft Word also has some kind of special elipse too. Thanks for your help!
