I bought a computer and it has a NEC 3550a with the latest firmware, but in the last couple of weeks it seemed to really have died when reading some dvds. The ones I have problem with are mainly burned from a lite on writer on another computer. Though I have found out that it isn't only limited to that (I think).

For the most part, it had problems with Ridata DVD+Rs 8x, and no brand dvd-rs. There are so many variables that I don't have a clue where to start. I'm wondering if anyone has a clue with this, or maybe its the laser is dirty and needs a clean. As I have left my drive open for some time sometimes. (cuz I'm forgetful and its not in a directly open area to be seen and remembered >.>)

anyway, any help would be nice, and if this is in the wrong section feel free to move it. I placed it here, cuz I sort of suspect the hardware.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, it can burn and such. And anything I burned works on my computer as well as other people's computers.

You're lucky to get that drive w/ a new PC.

Call tech support and see about getting it repaired or replaced. And/or consider installing a second drive that reads better than the NEC does. The NEC write well, but not so much on reading.

Use better quality dvd media than RIDATA/RITEK and no name brands. It is well known that NEC drives are not good readers.

Ritek is so-so quality media, but especially Ritek G05 (16x DVD-R), and the NEC 3550a does not like it at all. You're right that there are lots of variables but the media tends to be the most significant.
