do you have cable modem and a cable router? if you do then connect the switch to the cable router using a crossover cable. from the switch you run the cat5 cable to the other pc's network card.

    1) Why are you asking this on a VIDEO HELP board's "Newbie" board? This belongs in the off-topic / Computer board, as it has nothing to do with video.

    2) You have to run some sort of ICS or Proxy on the computer that is directly attached to the modem. That PC will act as a router, giving the other PC access to the Internet.

You can use a Proxy server; the Proxy is just some software that can be installed on the computer that is using the USB to your DSL modem.

    1. Download and install the software onto the computer with the modem
    2. Connect Both computers to the switch(use regular Cat5, not crossover cable)

Setting up this way, the computer that is connected to the modem has to be on for the 2nd(or more) computer/s to access the internet.

    Or

Just buy a Router and connect the DSL modem to the router and then connect your switch to the router also. Plug however many computer you want to the switch and only have the computer being used turned on(all or 1 if you want).

  7. Go to Google, search for NETWORKING and you will get all possible information regarding Internet sharing.
The best option for you is to go for a ROUTER, which is a modem cum Switch and would provide you facility for sharing internet on upto 4 pcs from one Internet connection.
Since you are in UK, your expenses should not exceed 100 Quids

If you have Windows XP on the PC connected to the router, then look up the help file on Internet Connection Sharing (ICS, as mentioned above) as it is built in.

This would be simpler if you were using an Ethernet connection to the computer instead of USB, then you could use an inexpensive router/switch like a D-link DI-604. (About $30US presently) And either computer can be off or on for the other to access the internet.

You don't need a switch or a hub or a router with only 2 computers using a USB modem connection. Here is one method, using a Ethernet card on each computer and a CAT5 Ethernet crossover cable between them, along with your USB modem connection and XPs built-in networking software. The problem is, the host computer with the modem connection has to be on for the second computer to access the internet: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_xp

Short version; With a working USB internet connection to your host computer:

    1. Setup your Ethernet card drivers on both computers.
    2. Plug in the CAT5 crossover cable into both computers.
    3. Run XPs Network Setup Wizard on both computers. Enable sharing of files, if you want.

It's about as simple as that. If you want to plug in more computers, then you need a hub or switch.

And this is a computer subject, not video. Moving you.

Since you have USB cable modem (I guess you have already subscribed to an ISP and setup the PC for internet), the easiest is to buy a wireless router (or switch) connect to your modem and set it up with your PC. The other computer installed with a wireless card can detect the wirelss signal and you are good to go. Using wireless router, theoretically you can connect up 255 computers to the internet.

He says it's a DSL USB modem. If it doesn't have Ethernet LAN connections there are very few USB connected routers/switches on the market. It would be cheaper to get a different DSL modem with either Ethernet or 2 USB outputs. But it would have to work with your ISP.

DSL modems nowadays are mostly the same, but factory may config them differently for different ISPs. I'd just call up the ISP and demand an exchange for a regular Ethernet port modem. That's what I did with Pacbell (i.e. SBC, i.e. at&t) DSL. Got originally a Speestream 4060. It's so ****py their own tech told me to ignore two install prompts in order to get it installed, and it STILL didn't work. He then went back to his truck and pulled out an ethernet card and a Ethernet port DSL modem (Alcatel Speedtouch Home) and said here you go.

I suspect some ISPs don't really want you to share a connection. (Unless they can charge you extra for it. ) I've seen some aftermarket DSL modems that have both USB and Ethernet output.

Ethernet may a little more complicted than USB to setup, but a whole lot more flexible. I wouldn't have a broadband connection any more without a router with a firewall for at least some level of protection.

A few years ago, I went the whole route of using one computer as a host computer and having to turn it on to get on the net with my laptop. I use a cable modem now, along with a router and a gigabit switch for exchanging files between the computers. Suprisingly easy to set up with XP. W98 was a bit of a hassle when I used that.

kschang has the right idea. Demand a Ethernet modem, especially if they are charging you monthly rent for using their modem.
