just got it today, will happily play DivX from CD, but any data DVDs just come up as 'no disc'.
is it possible to soemhow 'fake' the DVD header or whatever so the machine think's its a CD rather than DVD?
thanks for any help/advice.

Are you closing the session? Have you tried a different brand/type of disc?
Google is your Friend -
cheers for the quick reply.
yes, definitely finalised - i'll have to beg/borrow another brand to try; but you have given me hope - i kind of expected to be told "don't be daft, will never work". -
Let me see:

Waves hands over shiny glass . . .
Because you are using a top of line xxxx player with some of the most expensive . . . I can't tell if it's DVD+r or DVD-r's. Sorry the crystal ball is cloudy today. In any case they are good quality made yyyy branded media and I also see you have updated your firmware to 1.0 . . . is that 1.08 or 1.09 again I can't tell.

Darn thing was working good yesterday.
There simply is not enough information to make an informed decision what might be causing your problems. -

You may want to try -r media. Sometimes players can be picky depending on disc format.(Divx, DVD, etc.) Usually when it comes to DivX it will play the files from DVD media but not CD so at least in that respect you got lucky.

just tried a couple of -r discs (datawrite & Mr Dvd, same 'no disc' message. happily plays DivX from a SD card though.

Since nobody answered your original question, no you can't fake a DVD to look a CD.
Have you considered the possibility that the "geniuses" who wrote the firmware for your player may not have considered the possibility that someone might want to play a DVD data disc? If so, it will never work without a firmware change.
From your not very informative posts, it appears that you are using really cheap DVD media, which might be part of your problem. I've never heard of this brand of DVD player and maybe it's just crap. What did it cost? 30 pounds or less? You get what you pay for. -
ok, enough with the digs about the lack of info; it wasn't needed for (or relevant to) the faking a cd question - but i suppose i am here asking for help so happy to go through the motions if thats what it takes.
yup maybe it's the firmware - the manual says that it will need to be kept upto date to fully exploit mpeg4. i'll be ringing them tomorrow.
and yeah, maybe it's crap, but have been using the media for a while & has been 100% reliable. -

ok, sorted.
rang the customer support - they said it's probably a 'machine error' and to just get it exchanged. got an exchange and it now works fine, recognises all the discs i tried yesterday, and happy with divx, xvid etc.
