  1. a friend of mine has created a WMV movie for his family to play under WindowXP

it won't play under X 10.3.9 in QT it says unknown codec or something like that.

under MPlayer OSX2 in 10.3.9 it opens and plays the music but not the video. MPlayers says its video format is 2pvw.

taking the file to 10.4.4 and using Flip4Mac I can then play the video in QT (?7) but again sound therre no video. QT there says windows media audio 9 standard, stereo, 44.1kHz, WVP2

so this codec WVP2 or pPVW cannot play? can it be converted in any of the two above set-ups?

family vacation for the grandparents to see, you see!

of course the GP's are smart and only have a Mac.

    cheers and thanks

    I almost hate to ask...
did you try using/installing the old Windows Media Player 9 for Mac?
What did it do with this video?

Just because we have Flip4Mac doesn't mean WMP9 is
    totally obsolete..

  3. yes I tried the WMP9 first. it gave me the "file may not play correctly because it was compressed by using a codec that is not supported"

I assume its a default in windows that leaves the mac folks out in the dust.

    too bad for them!

flip4mac then really just alloys the (non) play in QT

    cheers

    and thanks

It could be that your Friend(?) encoded the video using the Windows Media Video 9 Professional Codec instead of the 'Windows Media Video 9 Standard' Codec. As far as I know, nothing will play the 'Professional' Codec on the Mac. I think Flip4Mac is working on that and the 'Voice' Codec which also will not work on the Mac. Tell your friend to use the Standard codec and you should be able to play it.
