Greetings, I just got a new DVD player that has TV Guardian. TVG takes out all the bad words in movies. It works off of Close Captioning but it will not work with subtitles.

Universal Studios only includes subtitles on their movies so TVG doesn't work on them.

What I want to do is convert Subtitles to Close Captioning. Can anyone help me here or point me to a guide? I can rip the subtitles, but I can't find anything tutorials on converting ".sub" files and putting them into the DVD video.

    Thanks

I've been working on this, but I'm having problems. Can anyone help?

My finished product is playing CC but they are not starting at the right spot.

Line 561 at 01:00:19,162 --> 01:00:22,461 is the first line that plays in the finished video. It is playing 24 seconds into the movie.

Line 1 is suppose to be played at 00:01:22,028 --> 00:01:24,588

Can you give me any idea's why this is happening? I would love your help. =)
These are the steps I am taking:
1- rip and shrink (to DVD5) Title 1 (video, english audio, english subtitles) from DVD movie with DVD Shrink
2- Demux to "m2v" and "ac3" with VobEdit
3- Open movies IFO from DVDShrink rip with SubRip. Action, SubPictures to Text via OCR to "srt" subtitle file.
4- Convert "srt" to "scc" with "subrip2scc" (no options)
    5- DVDMaetro - compile "m2v" and "ac3" and import the line 21 file I made with subrip2scc

Am I doing anything wrong? Thanks for any help that can be given.

  3. You are doing the exact reverse of what I have been doing.

In step 3-4, have you tried viewing the SRT file in subtitle workshop and verifying the time values?

The srt file looks perfect from what I can tell.

  5. Can you mux an MPG with audio and test this with the SRT in Subtitle Workshop? If that checks out, it must be the sub2scc conversion, or authoring. You can preview the subtitle synch with the movie and SRT.

Interesting the playtime of 24 seconds is close to the 22 second value on line 561. Possible the hours value is being cut off?

I have never Created a CC file, but have converted dozens of CC to SRT. The timings seem to be a bit tighter but not fundamentally different. The different entries do come very close together, sometimes overlapping. The overlapped entries do not display in the SRT file. Wonder if you have the same situation in reverse?

How many lines total, what is total running time? Is line 561 at a halfway mark, a chapter point, or possibly a layer break?

Very few people (you may be the first or second I have seen) author disks with CC as oppossed to Subtitles, there is not a lot of experience available in this area.

Is this movie Less than two hours and is line 561 the First Entry after the one hour mark? Do all the other lines display correctly in synch with the line 561 beginning point? Meaning the entry for one hour and 50 seconds plays at 50 seconds, and so on? I'm leaning towards the hour value being cut off, this is a guess at this point.

It is the first CC played after the 1 hour mark. I'll see if I can find an easy way to edit the SRT times up by 1 hour.

I added 1 hour in the SRT to SCC conversion and it works now! Thx for all the help.

EDIT: I've done a couple movies and its working great. I have to adjust one or two seconds less than the 1 hour to make it work perfect; but I'm very happy with the results.

Again thanks so much for pointing that out. I was stumped until you mentioned it playing the first CC after the 1 hour mark.

  8. So it is consistent over several different movies? Interesting, sounds like a bug in the program, you might want to notify the author.

Is that one of McPoodle's tools?

Not surprised about the hour thing. Many apps don't even think all the way through to adding an "Hours" field. Or doing a correct "Frames" field (as opposed to milliseconds, or fractions of a second).

That 1 or 2 second delay makes sense also...
DVD subs are generated in realtime with very little delay. CC decoding & display has a built-in SLOW data rate that basically forces it to have some delay. Of course, when creating CC's in the first place, most producers will shift the mark for the CC a second or 2 earlier so it'll have finished decoding and be ready to display at exactly the right time.

    Good job! 8)

You'll find that your movie has a timestamp offset of 01:00:00:00. A lot of movies do this. Either adjust your movie to a zero offset, or bias your CC starting by one hour.

Also, closed captions do not display until an EOC (end of caption) is received. This means that the entire caption must be in the buffer, ready to be displayed when an EOC is received. This is why you see your captions appearing late. McPoodle's tools can adjust for the proper display times.
