I am really new to video programming, bare with me. I have a little extra time and was wondering how to program a video codec from the ground up. I know Videohelp.com has great tools, and there are a lot of packages on the market, but I was hoping to learn jpeg/mpeg programming for myself. Does anyone know where I can find documents/books/discussions on how to program video? Also, are the jpeg/mpeg programming libraries standard on Windows/Mac machines, or are they downloadable? Thanks in advance.

Good start. Any others? Preferably with coding tutorials and/or examples. I am hungry for info, the nuts and bolts aspect mostly. Thanks RedWudz.

Lots of books on MPeg. Some with coding examples.

MDSN is full of codec and DirectShow coding examples.

A good google search can bring up academic labs and coding examples.
