  1. I have a .avi file that gspot tells me is a matroska media file. I'd like to convert to divX/Xvid but can't open it in Virtualdub. I've followed the guide for converting .mkv to avi using virtualdubmod or MVKextract, but i just get error messages. Tried changing the extension from avi to mkv but that didn't help. Can anyone here help please?

Hmm... that's odd. I didn't think GSpot had much support for Matroska files (but I'm willing to admit I'm wrong ). Which version of GSpot are you using? Also, it might be a good idea to post a screenshot of the GSpot window in question here (if you prefer, blank out the filename/path) so that we can examine it.

  4. Thanks for the quick replies, guys. I've included a screen shot of gsopt. I tried to run alltoavi but i get an error message: "Run time error 372. failed to load control 'CommonDialog from omdlg32.ocx. Your version of comdlg32.ocx may be outdated..."

  5. It might help if you said what error message you got when opening with VirtualDubMod.

So what happens if you rename the extension to MKV, and use MKVExtract to open it?

  8. I got alltoavi to run, but when i pressed "execute job"it just wiped the file clean off my HD. Good job i'd copied it first. MKVextract just says "files extracted successfully" (or files demuxed successfully in gui 1.6.2), but doesn't actually do anything.

You did install the latest and greatest Matroska pack, right? (Have to ask!)

  10. I think so. It's GUI 1.6.2 right? I also tried it in GUI 1.5.

MKVExtractGUI requires mkvextract plus dependancies from mkvtoolnix to run.

MediaInfo would give much more usefull info than GSpot. For instance the video could already be XviD or you meant that you want to convert to an avi?

  15. Had more luck after i ran the avi through avimux to produce a slightly smaller file with an mkv extension. This "opened" in virtualdubmod, but immediately closed. Alltoavi opened it, processed an .avc and .mp3 file, but after the muxing into an .avi all three files just disappeared at the end. After installing the latest ac3 codec, i managed to open the original.avi in TMPEG (v12a) and produced an mpeg2 file which i'm now converting to Xvid using VirtualDub mpeg!

Here's a shot of the original avi file in mediainfo in case anyone can think of a more elegant solution that actually works

DTS?! That's not AC3 at all then... Does BeSweet convert DTS? Hmmm...

  17. The latest ac3 filter enabled me to open the avi file in goldwave and extract the audio, and it allowed tmpegenc to convert the audio as well as the video. Didn't need besweet.
