O.K., Keepvid.Com does not work with some sites. I've read program descriptions and a few thread recommendations on tools like Streambox suite, Replay, Snagit and others. I plan to try some of these, but in the meantime I have some related questions.

    1. A .WMV video that the site won't let you download streams here (W2K SP4, WM9 installed) with no video, although the soundtrack can be faintly heard. There is a message for codec download, even though I already have WM installed. Does this indicate that the video is for WM10 only ? If so, screw 'em -- don't think I want to mess with version 10. (I have seen a similar situation with Quicktime, where the video played with picture as well as sound only after upgrading to QT-7.
    2. If I install VLC or Zoom Player, or something like that, are they capable of "stepping in" for WM, for the purposes of streaming playback ?

But I guess I have to be able to play the video here first as it streams in, before there is anything to be done about capturing it.

I may be wrong, but if I remember correctly, QT7 added a handful of new formats and improvements. Not sure about WMP10, on the other hand.

I don't know about Zoom Player (I haven't looked at it), but VLC definitely does allow you to stream Windows Media streams (such as mms: streams). It may or may not have a problem with some WMV formats, though (I don't know how well it supports WM3/9; they may have no problems with it now. I don't have any sample streams to test. ) Also, you can try VLC's transcoding abilities to convert the stream to a regular AVI, or other format.

Some people do indeed set VLC up as their default player for streaming video, but I'm not sure how well it works, as I haven't tried it. I haven't heard any complaints.

SUPER also added the ability to save streams to disk and transcode them, as well, in their most recent version.

Super works great for 2-5 minute clips, but the mms streams I'm trying to download don't work for any of the "tools" listed on this website.

Perhaps they are DMR protected, but how do I know if they are? How can you check that?

If you try to playing through WMP they will attempt to download a license if they are DRM protected.

Hmm.. Very frustrating. Maybe my connection is sub-par but I've read that these Capturing tools allow you to download even high quality streaming media even with a dial-up connection.

Then why is it that the download stops at 36% or 3.5 minutes of a 16 minute streaming video? Tricky this one.

I haven't really had a problem with any streams of any length or resolution using SUPER or VLC. It could be a buffering issue, perhaps.
