I tried to use LG 4040B used as external USB drive. But it is not working. I had upgrade the Bios to A304.
It works perfect as internal drive.
Now it only read CD. But not DVD.
Anyone know why and how to fix it please

I have a LG4040B used in a external USB encloser and it works fine. With firmware A304. Sorry no help.

Probably you need to set it as master to work! Check if you have set the jumper correctly!

As said before, set the DVD drive as "master".
Have some experience with DVD writers and external usb enclosures. There are compatibility issues and a certain drive might work perfectly in a PC, but not in a certian enclosure (as you experienced) or vice versa.
If the DVD drive works in the PC you can be sure it is not faulty.
You might do a test and mount eg an IDE hard drive or CD writer in the enclosure, just to verify that the enclosure works properly. There is a chance that the enclosure has a problem.
Beyond this, the only thing that makes sense is a firmware update and you did that.
Had similar problems myself and have updated drivers, forced ASPI layers and done all kind of things I found on the Internet. Nothing helped. Then I swapped my drive with another brand/model and it worked straight away.
That why I'd say from my experience - after you have checked that both enclosure and DVD writer work - all the fiddling will probably not get you anywhere, you are wasting your time.
If a PC and enclosure and drive are compatible you just plug everything together, and it will work. If it does not work, there is a compatibility issue and in most cases there seems to be no fix. One known problem is that some cheaper enclosures do not supply enough power to the DVD drive - that's something you just cannot fix by fiddling with software.
If you buy another brand/model DVD writer or enclosure you might find it works perfectly straight away. -
USB can be problematic at times. You want to check if you have other devices plugged into a USB port that might interfere. On some systems, as little as a USB mouse could cause problems. As mentioned, the chipset of the external enclosure may cause problems also. Most people have no problems with USB and external drives, but some do.
VIA motherboard chipsets are one thing to check for. And, if you can find out which chipset your enclosure has, you might do a Google search to see if anyone has similar problems with it.
You may just have an unlucky combination of factors, but still, there should be a solution out there somewhere. I'm assuming you are using the rear USB jacks. The front ones can cause problems also.
I'm not sure what else you can check for, but don't give up easily.
