I'm trying to convert a MPEG2 VOB (Previously a HDTV file) into a DivX .avi. Everytime I get to the "running compression test" stage I get this error:

    Cannot start video compression:
The source image format is not acceptable.
    (error code -2).

    What am I doing wrong?

Another Question, I want to preserve the sharpness of the HD picture in DivX mode, is there anything special I can do to keep it sharper? I have a .avi file that was coverted from a HDTV source and the image is so sharp and the file is only 90MB and 3 or so minutes long. What can I do?

To preserve sharpness you could use XviD instead of DivX, then you could use a CQM.

One possibility that you might check: Divx requires the the width be a multiple of 4 and the height be a multiple of 2, at least on my version, although a VOB should already have those dimensions.

The VOB is at 16:9, does that fit the required divisions?

The thread Baldrick linked to says that AutoGK latest version is compatiable with divx 6.1.x and not 6.2 and onwards and that might be why it doesn't work.

So XviD retains a sharper picture? I'll use that then.

XviD allows for the use of CQM's (Custom Quant Matrix) these can help preserve sharpness. DivX only allows for H.263 and MPEG, of which MPEG will give you the sharper picture.

No real way to control such settings in AutoGK though. ESS will force H.263 quants. MTK will use a preset matrix. I think one of Sharktooth's.
