I'm totally new at this stuff so don't worry, if I sound stupid it's because I really am.

I have a DVD with episodes of a TV show on it and want to edit only the good parts of the TV show and burn it on a separate DVD. I used DVD Decrypter to rip the episodes onto my computer and then tried to use VOB2MPEG to convert the VOB files to MPEG. (I'm hoping to just use Windows Movie Maker to edit since it's already on my computer.) It took about a half an hour to convert, and then when I tried to watch it on Windows Media Player it was all broken up and choppy, stopping and starting again and so on. I put it in Windows Movie Maker to watch and there was sound but no picture. Am I doing something wrong? Is there another program I can use? Please help, and explain it to me carefully. It's summer, after all, and my brain's on vacation.

if you play the mpg with something else like mpc, videolan do you also get playback problems?

and don't use wmm for editing if you only want to cut, use a mpeg2 editor like videoredo to avoid reconverting and then make a new dvd from the mpeg2 files with an authoring tool like tda.
or you can also try import the vob directly in tmpgenc dvd author and do both editing and author, burning directly.

Yes, I'm still getting playback problems even with mpc. What's the deal?

I downloaded the free trial of tmpgenc dvd author but will I be able to burn what I cut onto a DVD without buying tmpgenc?

I've tried everything but nothing's working. Could it just be my computer?

    Ofcourse you didn't.
I would demultiplex the vob's to video and audio files with ReJig. Then I would edit them with Cuttermaran. Then I would re-author to a new DVD with GFD. Hell, even then I would try to replace the original vobs with the reathored ones with Vobblanker in order to keep the original menu.

I demultiplexed the VOBs with ReJig but when I tried to edit them with Cuttermaran I got an error for the video saying, "The current video stream contains GOP errors! Cutting this streams can have unexpected results or Cuttermaran can crash" and an error for the audio saying "No audio codec installed," so I can see the video but I can't hear anything.

mpg2cut2 also works well with mpg OR vob files. You can stick your originally ripped vob file into mpg2cut2 and you can cut the commercials out.

Rip in ifo mode in dvd decrypter and make sure you have file splitting set to none and chapters set to none so you get one single vob file. Then simply start mpg2cut2 and open your vob file and then you can do it. No demultiplexing necessary and best part is you can open the vob and save it as an mpg ready to author.
