how Quicktime works. All I want is simple edit, cut and paste capability to get rid of unwanted parts of movie files and cut down the overall file size. Also looking for something to join clips together and being able to save in a format that doesn't create huge files would also be a bonus.

Sorry for the noob question I'm new to all this. If anyone can point me in the direction of such a program (or programs if I need more than one) I'd appreciate it.

I would start with VirtualDub or VD Mod. They work as well as most of the other AVI editors, but have lots of options. Not as 'user friendly' as Quicktime, but simple enough to use for just cutting and joining. Plenty of guides available also.

You can save your video without re-encoding if you just do the basic cutting and no resizing or filtering. Or you can encode it in most available AVI formats. Or frameserve the edited video directly to a MPEG encoder without saving it.
