I just purchased the LSX MPEG encoder and it get an error message (failed to open AVI video stream or file format error) when trying to read my AVI file produced with VideoWave 5. TMPGEnc has no problem with the file, however. Any hints on easy fix?
Thanks

So should I use VirtualDub with frame serving. Not very up to speed on that but there was some mention that LSX encoder was compatable with Virtual Dub. Anybody tried that? Other ideas?
Thanks -
If you are framserving with virtualdub name your signpost with an avi extension not vdr and it will work fine (name.avi). Do it all the time. LSX35 does not like DV type 1 avi files or files > 2G. If your file is a DV type 2 you need to download Maincept's DV codec to get that to work with LSX35.

Well, I can't get frameserving to work with Virtual Dub. When I installed the handler I did not get the options mentioned in the guide of proxyon or off but some other ones. I thought it might be part of the new version 1.4.8 but now I have my doubts. Maybe I didn't install it in the right place. I just left it in my download folder. Anyway I changed the vdr extension to avi but still no go. LSX doesn't like it. Lamont it is a type 1 file since Virtual Dub told me this when I tried to view it. (Audio not separate but mixed with video.) Truman, I couldn't figure out Avisynth although I installed it (the patch) since I can run the version script ok. I don't understand the concept here. It just runs in Mediaplayer but my goal is to get the AVI file into the LSX encoder.
They don't call this newbie conversion for nothing. I'm still trying but don't know what to try next? Help!

I have never run the patch for avisynth but if it is the one I think it is it changes LSX35 to only recognize the avisynth sigpost exension and no longer recognizes avi. Someone correct me if this is not true. In you look in the VirtualDub directory do you have an aviproxy folder? In that folder you should find proxyon.reg, proxyoff.reg, and readme.txt. Just double click on proxyon.reg and it will be followed by a message that it was installed. Since you have patched LSX35 to work with Avisynth I don't think it LSX35 will recognize the vdr signpost. You may have reinstall LSX35.

I had same problem with G200 avi, if it was not the default standard as specified by the video card. Are you using standard default capture settings?

Its Working!!
I uninstalled AVIsynth patch (I think) and double clicked proxyon.reg in the aviproxy folder. I started frame serving with no problems and did not have to re-install LSX encoder. One thing that confused me was VirtualDub 1.4.8 did not have anything in the aviproxy folder. I ended up copying the 3 files from the old version 1.4.7 to the newer 1.4.8 folder but it worked.
One note: the auxiliary setup for VirtualDub did not install the handler proxy as shown in the VCD guide "How to Framserve wtih Virtualdub". I had to doubleclick the file using Windows Explorer. Also you have to change the .vdr to .avi as you and the guide stated. Now I will see how this compares with TMPEGEnc.
Thanks much. -
I am glad, that you got to work.
Something to Avisynth. Normally LSX does not read .avs files. But if you patch LSX (mpeg2enc.exe), it will do it.
You have to copy avs_patch.exe to the LSX directory. Then open the commandline console and change to the lsx directory. Then type "avs_patch mpeg2enc.exe". It creates a 2nd mpeg2enc.exe file, that is able to read avs files. For avi or VirtualDub frameserved files use the original mpeg2enc.exe, that wont deleted or overwritten.
Now I got it to work with VirtualDub too ( I used the patched .exe)

Just as I suspected I don't have any audio with the LSX encoded MPEG file. Virtualdub stated it was a type 1 file and warned me the audio was mixed with the video and would not be processed so it wasn't the encoder's fault.
So what do we have? The quality of the encode is no better than TMPGEnc and I have no audio with this method! Also the LSX encoder was no faster! I'll probably stack this program on the ever increasing pile of unused video software, but I will try to get the audio out of the original AVI type 1 file if anyone has any ideas. Too bad Virtualdub doesn't process this type of file.
I'm getting a little soft setting at my computer all day long! I think I'll convert some exercise videos to CD. Yea, that should help. -
TMPG accept DV type 1 files. So you could do (if you still like) the video conversion with LSX. Use TMPG to extract the audio. Load the source file, select file > output to file > WAVE file, save .wav. Then do the audio conversion with your favorite audio encoder and multiplex afterwards.
Probably the easier way is to look for a DV type converter.
Have a look at this one for example:

bartmartin, a question...have you tried some basic troubleshooting? I suggest doing a basic AVI capture with Virtualdub, a small file, then opening it in Virtualdub, turning on frameserver, naming the framserver file aviframs.avi, starting LSX, opening the aviframes.avi file, and encoding that as DVD MPEG2. I use this process with great success. If this works for you, it narrows the problems down to VideoWave (no surprise there), or the type of file you have it creating. Otherwise, the next step may be reinstalling virtualdub and its frameserver.

rphunt: I will try the capture with Virtualdub, however, most of what I do needs to be edited and VideoWave does that ok. You are right that VW5 has a lot of problems I am discovering. For example I crash when the file goes over 2G. MGI's solution is don't do that! Even at that it should be 4G? Now that I think about it on one of my first captures it did automatically make 2 files? Also VW5 is not working as I type this. When I capture it seems ok until I stop and a big ? mark comes up and I can't open the file. I screwed something up or have a conflict somewhere. I will reinstall VW5 tomorrow. I also have Pinnacle Studio7 for editing but it won't work either. Craps out when I render the AVI. Everyone on the Pinnacle forum is complaining about all the bugs. I haven't even tried it with my firewire yet, just the DC10+. If they ever get Studio7 working it will be my editor of choice because of the cool things it does.
Truman: Thanks for the link. I will check out this DV converter. $50 seems a little steep, however. Tried to download the trial just now but site is down. Will try tomorrow.
Thanks for all the help guys.
