I'm making a compilation DVD and I've already ripped the VOB files I need using mactheripper. The files PAL format, and i'm going to make the dvd NTSC standard 720x480.
I've been using MPGStreamClip for my MAC OSX to convert the VOB into DV files. Does anyone know the best way to retain the best quality using this or any other program? I've been using the MPGStreamslip and converting to DV. is this the best format to retain original quality? Other possibilites are MPEG-4 and using Quicktime movie....where there are lots of settings and compression settings i'm not quite familiar with.
I thought DV format would be the best, because it doesnt take rendering time in Final Cut Pro.
Also, I've noticed that I can save the vob as different types of DV:
1)DV25
2)DVPro25
3)DVpro50
Any insight to the best way to do this??
Thanks a million guys!

If you already have the unencrypted VOB files, all you should need is something to author them all together with the appropriate IFO's, etc. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with exactly how to do this.
Certainly your current method will result in good quality but it seems a waste to have to transcode into DV only to have to go right back to VOBs anyway. Perhaps someone will contribute to this thread. Be patient. -
DV25 should be fine .. Just make sure you force the frame rate to 29.97 since your goal is NTSC. Without doing this, you're going to end up with NTSC resolution video but with the PAL frame rate.

A simpler route would be:
a. If you had a player that will play back PAL frame rate.
My RCA 5240p's playback PAL framerate back fine,
so all I would do is:
b. Use Toast 7's Media Browser to use the VOBs to
burn to DVD. When asked to re-encode to NTSC,
I just choose leave unchanged/choose PAL.
It usually knocks it out, creating a menu and or shrinking
to fit DVD-5.
But Pretty much if you are stuck having to have NTSC f.r.,
then Ant's is the way to go. Defintiely go for minimal
degredation, so stay away from anything that would
recompress, such as MPEG-4."Everyone has to learn, so that they can one day teach."

For best quality and still be ntsc, would convert the PAL dvd vobs into a PAL DV. USE jes deinterlacer to perform a standard conversion (use telcline and not blend) to NTSC DV and then reburn. But if you get a dvd player than converts PAL to NTSC on the fly as the previous post said, thats alo anothe roption which is much eaiser. The toast conversion will work, but will slighly lower the frame rate quality.

Also, forgot to say that this prosess takes a long time, with 3 conversions (dvd pal - dv pal - dv ntsc - dvd ntsc) but is the best quality in the end. Jes deinterlacer pretty much will put together full frames of the pal video and spit out a ntsc interlaced video by performing somthing simular to 3:2 pulldown
