    Help please

When I play mpg2 files in Windows Media Player, the total time code is totally wrong. For example, a file that should run for 1hr 17mins appears with a total time of 9min and 10secs. The other funny thing is that the file will tend to stop a short time after the 9min 10sec mark. If I back up the slider, it will start to play from that point, but it could be further along in the movie, well past the 9min 10sec point.

If I open the same file in Intervideo's WinDVD6, the file plays fine and the correct total time is shown.

This has been replicated with several recorded videos on my HDD. This never used to happen before.

I've had this same problem appear on two of my PCs. One I just setup as my new HTPC. It worked fine at first, and then something changed that I cannot pinpoint.

    Anyone else see this?

    Thanks in advance.

wmp has no built mpeg2 decoder so it uses the one you install like dvd players or codec packs or video software.

you can try reinstall windvd so it becomes the default mpeg2 decoder for wmp.

    Thanks for your suggestions.

I did attempt to change the merrit ratings of the installed decoders, but that did not work.

Maybe the MS software you suggested can point me in the right direction.

Is it the decoder that will determine the length of an mpg2 file, or is it a combination of differnt things, ie decoder, render, the application itself that uses the decoder?
