  1. I have a 2-month-old Sony Vaio with Windows XP Professional SP2 on it. I just tried to use Windows Movie Maker on this machine for the first time, and it pops open a small window that has "Error" in the title bar, a round red circle with X through it in the text part of the window, and an OK button to click. There is no text in this window, just the red circle. When I close that window, a second one just like it pops open that I also have to close.

Does anybody have any insight into why this is happening? I've been working with Sony to resolve it, and under their instruction I've downloaded and reinstalled SP2. Didn't solve the problem.

I'll keep pestering Sony, but although the guys I've spoken to seem like pretty sharp techies, this issue eludes them. I don't think I can call Microsoft directly, I think I have to go through Sony. So I'm hoping maybe someone here has seen this problem before and can advise me.

I don't know if it matters, but I have installed other video-related stuff on my machine, such as DVDx, Intervideo WinDVD Creator, Intervideo WinDVD, VirtualDub, DVDInfo, QuickTime, RealPlayer, Google Player, and ISObuster. All of these applications coexisted peacefully with Movie Maker on my old machine, which makes me think they're probably not the culprit here.

Any ideas? Insights? Has this happened to anyone else?

  2. Quite honestly, the best thing to do is uninstall the other video tools and see if Movie Maker starts behaving. If it does, reinstall each tool one by one, testing Movie Maker each time.

Do you have a restore point set up that you could easily go back to?

Also, you could try creating a new user account on the computer and log in to it - if there are some messed up user settings, this may reveal them.
