Changes such as those to Demolition Man are common, and are basically a product placement or rights issues. A compant pays to have their product in the theatrical version, then refuses to pay more to have it used in the video release. The same issue often happens with music, where the film makers pay royalties to use a song in the theatrical release, but then chose not to for the video release and have to alter the sound track accordingly. These are simple commercial issues and deals.
