if this pool is about dvd to divx/xvid tools why is there an "i dont do divx/xvid" option?
My opinion is that if the question is about dvd/divx/xvid only viable options should be presented.
I have 2 favourite tools both in 1st place. Avi.net for excelent GUI,simplicity and video output quality, I use StaxRip when i want more configurationsI love it when a plan comes together! -

Usually virtualdubmpeg2 for me
Though half the time I'll do windows movie maker to wmv so I can get a fixed file size without fooling with a bitrate calculator - I know call me lazyDonatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -

Best way to do it that I've found:
Run Nero Recode and set it to 2 passes. Take the finished product and convert it with Mp4Cam2AVI. The Nero Recode takes about an hour to an hour and a half for a two hour movie, and Mp4Cam2AVI takes about ten minutes.
The finished product looks fantastic, and plays in all stand-alone DiVX players as well."I'm sick of paying for dinner and being served cowshit, while they give the bums eating out of the garbage my meal."

Interesting that nearly half the people on here don't use the format used for the Videohelp short film competition.....
Maybe that's why there weren't too many entries. -
Yes, I agree, Eddie! LOL
You got it jussst right! People are misunderstanding things here and therefore changing numbers such as 69, 9, 11 or whatever...
