  1. I can't get subtitles to work with my DivX movies! I don't see any subtitles ever.

I tried using Windows Media Player 11, VLC Player 0.8.2, DivX Player 6.2, and Media Player Classic 6.4.9, on several different movies with subtitles.

The subtitle files have the .sub extension and have the same file name as the .avi file (without the extension). So, if the movie is named "movie.avi", the subtitle file is "movie.sub".

I downloaded and installed DirectVobSub 2.23 without any problems.

In Windows Media Player 11, I set the option to use subtitles: Play->Lyrics, Captions, and Subtitles->On if available

In Media Player Classic, I set the DirectShow video output VMR7 and VMR9 (windowed and renderless -- whatever that's about), according to some troubleshooting tips I found. Still nothing.

Still nothing. I uninstalled DirectVobSub and installed VSFilter 2.37 and tried everything over again. Still nothing.

The video plays fine in all the players, but not a single subtitle.

What the heck is going on? What else can I try?

This is a text .sub file? Because .sub is also half of a VOBSub file. In such a case you would also need the idx for it to work.

  3. Yup, that was the problem. I just figured it out on my own and came back to respond to my own message. Anyway, thanks.

Note to others: .sub files come with .idx files which need to be in the same directory, with the same filename.
