I can usually backup and burn a disk in 40 minutes to an hour depending on the size of the disk. For some reason it is much slower now. Even the opening scan is taking like 5 minutes when it usually takes 2. When i start the backup it starts out ok but when it gets to a certain point the backup rates just starts dropping and the timer starts going up. I have never had this problem before. Does anybody have any ideas what could be causing this. I use nero to burn. I recently had windows xp reinstalled on my computer and everything else is running like a dream. Any help would be appreciated. I have two young nieces that are over at the house alot and have way too many disks to backup for it to take 3 hours per disk. Thanks

  2. Hi ryanch.
With a recent reinstall of XP (from what I've learned here) is to make sure DMA is on with all drives. I'm not an XP user but that reply comes up a lot.
It sounds as if you are using Shrink to rip and encode from your disc all at once.
I have found that using a tool like DVD Fab Decrypter or DVD Decrypter to first rip it to the HD then open the file with Shrik and encode is way faster.

Since this is a new occurance and you've had a recent install of your OS It sounds like a DMA or other OS issue.
Someone with more knowledge will probably jump in with advice.
    Good luck,
    NL

If you suspect DMA problems: To check DMA/PIO mode within Windows:

    Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

From there, right click on one of the channels and choose 'Properties>Advanced Settings'. All drives should be DMA mode. The 'Current Transfer Mode' for Hard drives is usually DMA 4-6 and DVD burners DMA 2-4, DVD ROMs usually DMA 2. If you see any in PIO mode, that can slow things down.

Changing them back may be easy or complicated. First see if you can change them in that window. If not, I usually uninstall the channel the drive is on and let the OS reinstall it. This will usually take a reboot. This will not damage any files on the computer.

From there, if no luck, get back to us.

If you are using DVDShrink for backups, it should take less than an hour total. The other possibilities are some other program running in the background, stealing CPU cycles. You may be able to check this with Task Manager and see what is running. Make sure your spyware/antivirus programs are up to date and working, also.

Ok. I checked the DMA's. My primary channel says Ultra DMA mode 5 for device 0 and not applicable for device 1. My secondary channel says Ultra DMA mode 2 for device 0 and also says not applicable for device 1. When I had the OS reinstalled she put all new spyware/antivirus programs on so that shouldn't be the problem. When i look in task manager my sytem idle process has a cpu usage of 94-97 percent. could this be the problem? why would that be so high. Thanks guys.

  5. Are the discs scratched or dirty? That can make a difference.
Believing yourself to be secure only takes one cracker to dispel your belief.

System Idle Process 94%-97% means your cpu usage is 3%-6%, it should be an ok number (mine idles at 99%, or 1% cpu usage).

You may want to check and make sure that you are actually running at rated cpu/memory speed. You may have inadvertantly lost your bios settings and are running at some default setting.
