    Does it still do that? I thought that you had to select the audio stream, then save to wave.

    Either way, virtualdub is correct.

    I think you're thinking of virtualdubmod. The standard virtualdub should still do the file-save wav feature.

    For another alternative, there's also AVI2WAV. It's what I've used in the past, though some have reported it may have problems with AC3 audio. I don't know if that's true, though.

    Others on these forums have also suggested Goldwave.

    Extracting to me means demuxing, not decoding though. AVI-Mux GUI or VirtualDubMod are good for this.

    BeSweet can do this, especially if you want to transcode it (use the Wizard at least to begin with). Input: AVI, output WAV, MP3, MP2 etc. But note the AC3 export is a bit flaky, usually too quiet.
