    Hi,

I bought 2.0 the other day once I got my pioneer 111 single layer installed. I'm authoring two one hour episodes of the original startrek I recorded off of analog cable. Here are the specs (identical for both epsiodes):

As you can see it was recorded into proper dvd format for ntsc.

Previously with the older TDA version it would take about 7-10 minutes to author a simple menu with 5 minute chapters for two one hour shows already in dvd mode. Now with the same scenario its already taken 20 minutes with an estimated 40 to go!!!

From what I remember I set it to 5 minute chapters and only the top menu showing the one picture for each of the two episodes. No motion menus that I can remember. So why would this suddnely take an hour to do what took 10 before????

Is there something I clicked by mistake perhaps? Is there a new feature of tda 2 I'm using I didn't realize? I didn't set it to transcode since it was only 4.2 gb and I'm using a single layer disc. It hasn't even started burning yet.

    Any ideas???

EDIT - Ok I tried it again. This time I tried two seperate mpgs. Both are 1 hour DS9 recordings. I had used mpg2cut2 to cut down the two original star trek's I tested earlier. This time I took the two 1 hour DS9's and put them in TDA without cutting them. I left them uncut and no chapters and no menus. Unfortunately I was at about the 4.6gb mark so I conceded and used the internal transcoding option now available in tda 2.0. It was only 20 minutes instead of an hour!! It must be something to do with the chaptering. All I did was set it to automatic 5 minute chapters. I always did that in the earlier tda. But something screwy made it longer this time. But no chapters and no menus worked a lot faster.

Anyone else experience this with 2.0???

Well since no one else replied I'll say something although I stopped just short of buying 2.0 when I learned about the spyware-ish registration scheme you need to keep it running. A lot of people say TDA's built-in transcoding feature sucks and that Tmpgenc has gotten much, much worse in recent versions. I did not say that, just reporting what others have said. There are a few threads here on the subject, such as -> https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=301941&highlight=tda

I hope somewhere in there is an answer that might help you more than I could.

Tmpgenc express 4 trial is decidedly slow at encoding divx at 2 pass vbr as i am testing it no filters applied on an an overclocked athlond 64 3000+ by 10%.

They really cannot keep on doing this as tmpgenc have always had decent quality but speed is deplorable. I will not but this rubbish. CCE basic is far better value and so much faster!!!

Thanks markc32 but I was actually reffering to the authoring program.

To crayoneater - I've just started using the internal transcoder and seems to be ok. I do like not having to load dvd shrink after authoring, saves a step.

So far it seems that by not doing chaptering or menuing I'm getting pretty fast authoring times. For the moment I've got a back log of DS9 and Stargates I recorded last week so I'm just doing barebones no frill dvds just to free up the harddrive space. I may reauthor them and snip out the commercials later.

Overall I am happy with 2.0 though. Its a little more refined and a slicker looking interface than the earlier version.

Sorry mate i was referring to them in general. Authoring is way to slow too. They need to sort the speed act out unless anyone can afford overclocked opterons!! It is plain ridiculous!

TMPGEnc products are largely falling out of favor these days. They have lost the detailed aspects found in the PLUS encoder days, and the authoring software has always been lacking.

I still support TMPGEnc Plus 2.5, but that's it. All those new encoders are watered-down dummy-user crap. CCE Basic and Procoder Express do better encoding. VirtualDub does similar filtering, and frameservers have really gotten better.

For easy authoring software, I've started to like SVCD2DVD for simple tasks. It's just as easy, and it's far more stable. For advanced authoring, save up some funds, and go grab Ulead DVD Workshop 2.

The MPEG editing software is horrible. You'll have a far better experience using VideoReDo or one of the Womble MPEG editors.

TMPGEnc products remind me of high school kids that put stripes on their cars and change out the exhaust, then pretend it's a race car. It's not. If you want the race car, go buy the damned race car. Whatever you do, stay grounded to reality. TMPGEnc products are very basic, and quite lacking of advanced features and stability. Just how things are.

TMPGEnc also nickle-and-dimes you with various plug-ins (AC3 support, for example).

The final problem is the requirement to have computers connected online for periodic checks. Guess what? Quite a few people out there have dedicated video systems that never go online.
