I recently bought an original VHS video tape (NTSC), the tape was released in the late 1980's.

I have tried to capture it as an MPEG, but whenever I do I get a thick horizontal white line across the complete MPEG?

I usually have no problems with capturing this way, the only time I might get a white line like this is if the tape was really old and flickers, but even then it is only temporary and the white line will only last while the tape is poor.

Do you think there is some kind of anti copying device on the tape causing this? And is there a way around it?

The video title has never been issued on DVD so I would really like to capture it.

    ATI Card? Looks like this?

Regardless if it's a commercial DVD it will inevitably have Macrovision on it. How to proceed really depends on the device.

To save you mucking about with driver's installed on the pc ... get hold of what is called a video stabalizer ... it should stop the problem .

For ati card's ... there is the possibilty of using previous driver package's which dont have this problem ... though it depend's on the card ... same for nvidia ... may not be possible for later card's .

For other capture device's ... pci or usb , it depend's on the driver package it came with .

Go with my first sollution ... it's much easier ... retail around $100+ ... check in ebay ... might get a bargain .

    -----------------------------------

As for video distortion ... there are various program's capable of fixing these problematic issue's ... scewed upper image .

Though these tend to be high in price because they auto the process with a combination of filter's applied .

Doing these correction's for free is possible , but very time consuming .

    Thanks for the replies.

I will have to think about what action to take. Like I say it is only one tape, so I dont want to spend alot of money just to convert one tape.

    Thanks
