hi. i have a ton of videos just setting on my computer from a CVS Disposable Camera.
    http://www.newyorkology.com/archives/images/disposablevideocamera.jpg
My problem is that the only way i can view any of these videos is through windows media player and Divx. I desperately need to edit them but when ever I attempt to import them to Premiere, the program just sits there at the importing dialogue box with zero progress. The videos are AVI files, and Gspot tells me that the needed Xvid codec is properly installed. So if anyone has any ideas on how to get Premiere to cooperate, your input would be greatly appreciated

and try install koepis xvid codec.
i did that today, and still no luck. once i open the .exe and let it install, is that all i have to do? i guess what im asking is, do i have to directly install the codec 'to' adobe or do PCs, in general, keep 'a pool' of codecs that video decoding programs pull from.

Sorry about that then, for me the ac3 codec helped a great deal for importing problems.

Premiere doesn't like xvid one bit, besides its best to edit video in a format that is less destructive. Generally converting to xvid is the last thing you should do to a video file, this is because the xvid format throws away alot of video infomation to compress to such a small size.

Download the huffyuv codec, its called a lossless codec because it doesn't throw away video infomation when it saves your video. For this reason the saved video file will be quite larger then the xvid file.
You should start by using Virtualdubmod
Load the xvid file and go to "video", "compressions", and select huffyuv. You dont need to change any settings in this codec, Simply save the video file.

Leave VDubMod open and you should try to open this file in premiere. If it doesn't load then its defenity a audio codec problem. you should always think of video as two combined files.

Premiere likes mp3 so go back to VDubMod and goto streams and then stream list. this will display all the audio tracks saved to the file.
First click demux (this means to seperate the audio from the video)
It will save in the format that its incoded into the video, so if you see its .ac3 you will need that codec I posted earlier Or you can simply select it to be mp3 and save.

Now you can disable this audio stream from the same list in VDubMod (near the demux button)
Save the video only in huffyuv.

Now you can import the video AND the audio Mp3 file seperatly into premiere.

    Things you may need
    The video codec
    Huffyuv
    the Audio encoder
