New Burner Problems

Well I got the new pioneer 3 recently, and had it installed for me properly by my mate whos good with computers etc. Now when I go into shrink it doesnt recognise the dvd when I put it in my first drive (which is not for burning just playing, but i usually put the disc I want to shrink in there and then burn using the shrink program by putting the blank in the burner) Well it doesn't let me do that now it only reads from the second drive and halfway through it says handle error or something and quits out of it. I went to check if Nero was working ok, but it only allows me select the one drive as well instead of the two, so if anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated also when I check what burners I have installed, it does show up there but it does not seem to read the discs in it. When I try to shrink using DVD Shrink sometimes this message comes up incorrect parameter? and it has yet to work since i installed my new drive

Sometimes when you install a new drive your burning software will not recognize the new drive. The easiest solution I have found is to Uninstall and Reinstall the burning software.

the new drive works fine though its the old one that isn't working

make sure the drives are properly jumpered as master and slave if they are on one ide cable(or both are jumpered CS). possibly the cable was damaged during install, switch it out for a known good 80 wire one. new drive shouldn't have any effect on the old one if it had been properly installed.

On a cable, you can install two drives. The first drive at the end of the cable is normally the master. The second drive that is in the middle of the cable is normally the slave.

are there certain types of burner that have to be master and certain types that have to be slave or can they be either

hard to see in the above pictures, but on the back of the drives are small jumper pins with markings nearby. the pioneer would come from the factory set as master. if the old drive still in the computer is also jumped to master there is a conflict and the computer can't communicate with the drives because they both have the same ide address. you need to check the back of both drives to see what the proper jumper settings should be.

there is also a third option used on some computers/drives that is called cable select(CS) which when both drive are jumpered to CS allows the computer to address them by their position on the ide cable. doesn't work on all comps/drives, much better to set master/slave.

I think thats probably the problem, they are both master, if I change the non pioneer one to slave would it work

Still no luck my maxtor 4D060H3 still isn't reading discs or working in any way at all

The maxtor 4D060H3 is a HD. Is the HD not showing up in my computer? Now I'm lost we have moved from a DVD burner problem to a HD problem? I would open the case and recheck all the connections to all the HD and the burners.

nope it's not showing up in my computer. I'm sorry if iv'e confused you im not the best with this stuff. All I know is I use it to play dvds and cds and thats where I put the disc I want to shrink when im using dvd shrink

Does anyone know if its the new writer thats causing the HD not to work, or is it unrelated. And does anyone know what I could do to fix my HD

Perhaps try a new cable. I assume your main HD is working. Here's how your setup SHOULD be: Your main HD should be the primary Master. The DVD reader should be the primary Slave. The DVD burner should be the Master on the secondary port. The Maxtor 4D060H3 (I am assuming this is a second drive) is the Slave on the secondary. Check that this arrangement is the case (look carefully at the jumper settings for each). If that doesn't help, try using new, 80-pin cables.

If your configuration is different please correct me.

You could try putting that Maxtor 4D060H3 on the same IDE controller as your main hard drive. Set that Maxtor hard drive to slave. Then put your dvd-rom on the same IDE controller as your dvd burner. Set the dvd-rom to slave as well. As already suggested use new ide cables and make sure you have the jumpers set correctly on the hard drives, dvdrom and dvd burner.

I only have 2 disc slots. The pioneer burner and the maxtor

So, if that means you only have two devices (and not another HDD and another DVD reader) then set the Maxtor as Master (or single) on the Primary and the DVD burner as Master (or Single) on the Secondary. It's important to note that some drives have a "Single" mode - usually it's either jumper off or the same as the Master setting (According to Maxtor this is the case for your drive), but manufacturers sometimes change this around.

Also, is your drive being recognized by the BIOS as being there? Is it just Windows the doesn't recognize it?
