hi, It is my birthday 2day and my mum and dad have bought me a new DVD player and it is a Divx Philips DVDR3380 ( http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/DVD+&+Video/DVD+Recorders/Philips/DVDR3380/267212 ). I have tried to find any advice or comments on the dvd player from the left menu but the comments are empty. Due to the problems which i was having trying to get my old Sony DVP-NS305 to play converted movie was not working as posted before. Well moving on from that i was wondering if anyone either has this DVD player or knows how to burn avi movies to DVD.

The main quesitons i was wondering is do i still have to convert the .avi movies?
And also if this is right what i am think what software would you recomend to use for this.

    Thanks in advanced

If it is certified, then just burn the avi files to a disc as data. No conversion necessary. Most players have some restrictions on just how the avi files are compressed, generally they don't like qpel or gmc (although my LG will handle gmc level 1). You can see these in g-spot.

I am in two minds about my Divx based player. It certainly isn't as good a quality picture as my Pioneer DVD player for image quality, even on good discs, and most avi files are overcompressed, so the quality is lower than DVD in most instances. I have also noticed that some files will occassionally exhibit odd behaviour visually on playback. The same files convert without any hitches to DVD format. However it is great to be able to put3 - 6 movies to a disc without having to go through the hours of encoding previously necessary.

thanks for the quick replay. Is there any software which I could use to arange the differnet .avi movies in a menu on the dvd in data format. I have used Nero Vision and TMPGEnc to create menu for the dvds. I cant wait to not have to spend hours recording dvd and be able to have all of the Lord of the rings dvds onto one. [/quote]

If it is Divx Ultra Certified it may be able to read the .Divx format, which does allow for menus and chapters etc. Otherwise, no. You have to use what the player gives you - usually a file list.

If you do have an Ultra certified player, you could look at DivxMediaBuilder.
