A lot of the "opened" media are on clearance. Picked up a spindle of 25 (probably have maybe 20) Staples house-brand DVD-R's for $2.00 but YMMV.

The only problem with this is the question I ask myself when I see an open package:

Why was it returned? Why are they dumping it?

My answer is usually not a good one.

As a tester of media, and often frequent returner

I can tell you WHY I return spindles that often end
up on the "special deals" table:

Medium Errors with my Pioneer-109, -107, or -104 drives
    Verification Errors with same
    Lousy playback in Settop Machines

FWIW, ROF's questions should be first on your mind,
or at the very least remember this:

"if it seems too good to be true, it usually is."
"Everyone has to learn, so that they can one day teach."
