I once read a thread on here that pointed to a good guide on the right codecs to install and what options to set them up, but I cant seem to find it. Can someone point em to the aricle in question?

I'm not familar with that guide, however, the rule of thumb is to just install the codecs that you need. Whenever you come across a file that doesn't play, locate the codec needed and install it. For most files, all you will need is a mpeg2 codec and the latest divx codec.
