    Hi guys,

here's my situation. I have a mpg file that I need to cut down on the MB. How can I do this using TMPGEnc? I opened the Merge and Cut and put the file into Merge and Cut and played with the bitrate with no luck. I keep getting the same file size. I also have it set at Constant Bit Rate (CBR). So can anyone explain to me (step by step) how to take my mpg file and use TMPGEnc to reduce the file size (preferable without losing too much video quality)? Thanks in advance.

  2. Merge and cut is used to trim the footage running time, it has nothing to do with bitrate. you can reduce filesize by trimming the beginning and end, but this will probably not be enough.

Procedure is quite simple, open MPG in tmpgenc as source, set encoding options, lowering the bitrate to give estimated size. You will definitely lose some quality this way, how much depends on how much you lower the bitrate.

Rejig may be a better answer as a transcoder rather than an encoder.

This may give you some ideas with TMPGEnc. There are a lot of other guides available: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/tmpgenc_basic_guide.cfm Just look in the 'CONVERT' listing to the left.

If you want a program that does similar to DVDShrink for MPEGs, I would also recommend looking into ReJig.

    And welcome to our forums.

I would appreciate if you would go through the steps with me. Where do I open it as a "source" then do I just play with the bitrate? Anything else I need to set?
