converting avi'sand wmvfor ipod

Hi,
I hope I am posting right.
I have a video ipod 30g black a 5 generation.
Wondering how to covert avi's and wmv files.
also, I am using a windows xp home edition.
If there is a program hope it is free. Also, with instruction with it.
One more thing I am kind of new to computer"s.
