  1. I would like to know what the experts out there are doing.

I have captured some games (soccer, basketball) from TV analog with my Hauppauge 250 at around 6400-6800 mbps. What I have done in the past is to use either TMPG DVD Author or DVD Lab to make vob files and dvd shrink it to fit onto one disk. The whole game file is about 5 GB. Are there any other steps I can do to clear, sharpen up the video PRIOR to making vobs.

    Thanks

    My system
    P4, 2.8 ghz
    1 gb Ram
    Hauppauge 250 capture card
    250 gb external HDD

Don't use DVD Shrink for one ...

Also there are some tweak tools that allow you to adjust the sharpness of the Hauppauge WinTV PVR 250

Check out the following sites for tweaks and tips:

Instead of using DVD Shrink ... use a real software MPEG-2 encoder to re-encode the footage ... such as CCE or TMPGEnc Plus etc. although it is easier and better to just capture with the proper bitrate to begin with ... you are using too much bitrate if you have to "shrink" the files.

Although if you end up using a software MPEG encoder then you might as well just capture at a video bitrate of 15,000kbps CBR as that is MAX quality that card can do.

    Bingo. Thats the best option.

Though I just bought myself a dual layer burner so when it gets here I'll be able to up the bitrate a bit. At $35 USD its a real cheap upgrade nowadays.

BUT you're better off using a lower bitrate to fit a single layer disc. The less you process your video the better overall it will look.

All we're saying is using the proper bitrate for a single layer disc helps save time and hassle. That way you don't have to process it more than you have to.

    Exactly!

    ... but ...

If you do want to post process then do a 15,000kbps CBR video bitrate up front so as to get as high a quality source capture as possible.

That rigth yoda313 I use proper bitrate to no more then 9.7MBit/sec VBR
I Edit the File Womble MPEG-VCR
Then run thur with DVD MovieFactory
If it to big for single layer disc then I use DVD Shrink and Nero to burn becuase the copy utiliy still lack an option to lable a disc before burning with MovieFactory so that I use Nero.
