I have a Pioneer 260 (made for Walmart) and have read other owners saying it plays PAL right out of the box. Maybe they mean there's no major problems (audio-synch loss, flickering video, etc). Whenever there's any motion, it's subtly unsmooth, like the framerate isn't quite right. I watched a PAL dvd on someone's hacked Cyberhome player and saw the same effect. To me, this is NOT playing PAL correctly. Am I the only one who notices this? What phenomena am I seeing? And do true multiformat dvd players really output NTSC correctly? For example, I see online there is a multiformat Pioneer 383 ("grey market" - not really legal in the USA but still buyable online): it's designed to be able to convert PAL and output to NTSC. Will it really do this, or will I be seeing the same phenomena as before?

they all need to convert pal to ntsc and it introduces subtle glitches. same as re-encoding. those frame rate changes will show up as minor hitches/jerkiness. better encoders can avoid the audio problems. only way to not get it completely is to buy a copy that was telecined to your region's framerate originally.

probably dropping a few frames per second from 29.97fps to 25fps...slightly jerky...it's not the NTSC tv...wife bought cyberhome from WM...same thing...I'm still trying to fix this conversion but without much success

So do true, designed multiregion players work as well as people say? I wonder because people also say the Pioneer and Cyberhome work perfectly, so I don't know whom to believe.

I am wondering about this also, I am currently looking to replace my LG DVB418 DVD player that has a skipping problem recently. I need a player that will play both NTSC and PAL and preferably also HD Upconversion also. I really dont want to get another LG DVB418 as I dont want to run into the same problem with the skipping after a little over a year of use.
Anyone have any suggestions on a good player? I also wouldnt mind a DVD-VHS combo unit as long as it does all of the above. -
